The Broward County Tax Collector’s Office continues to demonstrate strong fiscal stewardship, returning more than $17 million in unspent funds from the 2024–2025 budget year to Broward County and other taxing authorities.

How the Tax Collector Model Works

The Broward County Tax Collector operates as a fee-based office, meaning it generates revenue to cover the cost of its operations rather than relying solely on taxpayer funding.

In accordance with Florida Statute 218.36, any excess funds remaining at the end of the fiscal year must be returned to the county and appropriate taxing authorities.

This model ensures transparency, accountability, and a built-in mechanism for returning value directly to the community.

As part of its long-term strategy, the Tax Collector’s Office is preparing to take on driver license services beginning in summer 2026—a responsibility that represents a significant operational expansion.

Currently:

  • The State of Florida manages over 600,000 driver license transactions annually in Broward County
  • These services cost more than $30 million each year
